CVE-2016-3182
Linux Debian vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2016-3182 is a vulnerability discovered in OpenJPEG before version 2.1.1. The vulnerability exists in the color_esycc_to_rgb function within bin/common/color.c, which allows attackers to cause a denial of service through memory corruption by using a specially crafted JPEG 2000 file (NVD, CVE).

Technical details

The vulnerability manifests as a heap buffer overflow in the color_esycc_to_rgb function. According to AddressSanitizer's output, the issue involves both an out-of-bounds read and potential out-of-bounds write, leading to heap corruption. The problem occurs when processing specially crafted JPEG2000 image files, triggering a buffer overflow at address 0x61300000e000 during a read operation of size 4 bytes (GitHub Issue).

Impact

When exploited, the vulnerability can lead to denial of service through memory corruption. The issue specifically affects the executables shipped with OpenJPEG, while applications linked with openjpeg-libs or openjpeg-devel are not affected (RedHat Bugzilla).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability was fixed in OpenJPEG version 2.1.1. Users are recommended to upgrade to this version or later. For LTS distributions still shipping version 1.5.1 or 1.3, upgrading to version 1.5.2 is recommended as it contains more thorough fixes for the underlying problems (Openwall).
