WildBit Viewer vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A User Mode Write Access Violation (AV) vulnerability exists in Editor+0x76af of WildBit Viewer v6.6 that allows attackers to cause a denial of service (DoS) via a crafted tiff file. The vulnerability was disclosed on November 10, 2021 (AttackerKB).

Technical details

The vulnerability occurs in the Editor component at offset 0x76af where a User Mode Write Access Violation is triggered when processing malformed TIFF files. The issue manifests as an invalid memory write operation using the instruction 'fistp qword ptr [ecx+edx]' at memory address 0x7fc7f8d0 (GitHub).

Impact

When successfully exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to cause a denial of service condition in WildBit Viewer v6.6 by crashing the application through a maliciously crafted TIFF file (NVD).

Mitigation and workarounds

Users should upgrade to a version newer than WildBit Viewer v6.6. The latest version available is 6.14 which was released on August 23, 2024 (WildBit).
