CVE-2020-26306
JavaScript vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

Knwl.js is a Javascript library that parses through text for dates, times, phone numbers, emails, places, and more. A Regular Expression Denial of Service (ReDoS) vulnerability was identified in versions 1.0.2 and prior (GitHub SecLab).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the URL validation functionality of Knwl.js. The library uses a regular expression pattern for validating URL links that is vulnerable to ReDoS attacks. This vulnerability was discovered using a CodeQL query which identified the regex as susceptible to exponential backtracking (GitHub SecLab).

Impact

This vulnerability may lead to a denial of service condition. When processing specially crafted input containing malicious URL patterns, the application can experience severe performance degradation due to the inefficient regular expression processing (GitHub SecLab).
