CVE-2020-36562
vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2020-36562 is a vulnerability in the github.com/shiyanhui/dht package that was published on April 14, 2021. The vulnerability affects all versions of the package with no known fixed versions (Go Packages).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from unchecked type assertions in the krpc.go file at the beginning of handleRequest() function. Several type assertions are made to the values of the parsed bencoded UDP packet without proper validation, specifically on line 428 with 't := response["t"].(string)' and line 445 with 'id := a["id"].(string)' among others (GitHub Issue).

Impact

When exploited, this vulnerability can cause the application to panic due to failed type assertions, effectively creating a denial of service condition. An attacker can trigger this by sending maliciously crafted messages to the application (Go Packages).
