CVE-2020-7059 affects PHP versions 7.2.x below 7.2.27, 7.3.x below 7.3.14 and 7.4.x below 7.4.2. The vulnerability was discovered in January 2020 and disclosed in February 2020. The issue exists in the fgetss() function when reading data with stripping tags (PHP Bug, NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability is an out-of-bounds read issue in the php_strip_tags_ex function. When using fgetss() function to read data with stripping tags, it is possible to supply data that will cause this function to read past the allocated buffer (Rapid7).

A successful exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to information disclosure or crash of the application (Rapid7, OpenSUSE).

Mitigation and workarounds

Users should upgrade to PHP versions 7.2.27, 7.3.14, or 7.4.2 or later depending on their PHP branch. Multiple Linux distributions have released security updates to address this vulnerability (Debian Security Advisory, OpenSUSE Security Update).
