CVE-2021-1885: 
macOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2021-1885 is an out-of-bounds read vulnerability discovered in Apple's ImageIO component that was fixed in macOS Big Sur 11.3, iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5, watchOS 7.4, and tvOS 14.5, released on April 26, 2021. The vulnerability was discovered by CFF of Topsec Alpha Team (Apple Support).

The vulnerability is an out-of-bounds read issue in ImageIO that was addressed with improved bounds checking. When processing a maliciously crafted image, this vulnerability could lead to arbitrary code execution (NVD). The vulnerability has a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (HIGH) with vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (NVD).

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system through processing a maliciously crafted image. This could potentially lead to unauthorized access and control of the affected device (Apple Support).

Apple has addressed this vulnerability by implementing improved bounds checking in the affected versions of their operating systems. Users should update to macOS Big Sur 11.3, iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5, watchOS 7.4, or tvOS 14.5 or later versions to mitigate this vulnerability (Apple Support).
