NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Improper sanitization of incoming intent in SecSettings prior to SMR MAY-2021 Release 1 allows local attackers to get permissions to access system uid data. This vulnerability was discovered in Samsung's pre-installed Android apps and was assigned CVE-2021-25393 (NVD, CVE).

The vulnerability exists in the SecSettings app and involves improper sanitization of incoming intents, which could allow attackers to gain read/write access to arbitrary files as a system user with UID 1000. The vulnerability was classified with CWE-94 (improper control of generation of code) and was later reclassified to CWE-732 for more specific categorization (NVD CNA Status).

The vulnerability allows attackers to gain read and write access to arbitrary files with system user privileges (UID 1000). This level of access could potentially allow attackers to modify device settings and access sensitive system data (Hacker News).

Samsung addressed this vulnerability in the May 2021 Security Maintenance Release (SMR). Users should update their devices to a version that includes SMR MAY-2021 Release 1 or later to protect against this vulnerability (Samsung Mobile).
