Mark Text through version 0.16.3 contains a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability that could lead to Remote Code Execution (RCE). The vulnerability was discovered in April 2021 and allows attackers to execute arbitrary commands by opening .md files containing a mutation XSS payload (NVD).
The vulnerability exists due to insufficient sanitization of language input for fenced code blocks in markdown files. When rendering these files, HTML stored as language input is not properly sanitized, allowing arbitrary JavaScript code execution. The exploitation is possible because nodeIntegration is enabled, which allows processes outside of Mark Text to be executed (GitHub Issue).
The vulnerability allows attackers to achieve arbitrary command execution on the affected system through maliciously crafted markdown files. Due to the enabled nodeIntegration feature, the impact extends beyond the application context, potentially allowing execution of system commands (NVD).
Users should upgrade to a version newer than 0.16.3 to address this vulnerability. The issue was reported and tracked as CVE-2021-29996 (NVD).
