Cortex XDR vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A local privilege escalation (PE) vulnerability exists in the Palo Alto Networks Cortex XDR agent on Windows platforms that enables an authenticated local Windows user to execute programs with SYSTEM privileges. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2021-3042, was discovered by Xavier DANEST of Decathlon and disclosed on July 14, 2021. The vulnerability affects Cortex XDR agent versions 6.1, 7.2, and 7.3 without content update 181 or later versions, while version 5.0 remains unaffected (Palo Alto Security).

The vulnerability is classified as 'Improper Control of User-Controlled File' (CWE-427) with a CVSSv3.1 Base Score of 7.8 (HIGH). The attack vector is LOCAL, with low attack complexity and low privileges required. The vulnerability has high impact ratings for confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Exploitation requires the user to have file creation privilege in the Windows root directory, such as C:\ (Palo Alto Security).

If successfully exploited, this vulnerability allows an authenticated local Windows user to execute programs with SYSTEM privileges, effectively gaining the highest level of access on the affected system. This could lead to complete system compromise, including unauthorized access to sensitive data and system resources (Palo Alto Security).

The vulnerability is fixed in Cortex XDR agent versions 6.1, 7.2, and 7.3 with content update 181 or later. Content updates are automatically applied for the agent. As a workaround, organizations can prevent local authenticated Windows users from creating files in the Windows root directory (Palo Alto Security).
