CVE-2021-32660 is a content sanitization bypass vulnerability discovered in the TechDocs component of Backstage, affecting versions of @backstage/techdocs-common below 0.6.4. The vulnerability was disclosed on June 3, 2021, and impacts the documentation content handling functionality of the Backstage platform (GitHub Advisory).

The vulnerability allows malicious actors to bypass the TechDocs frontend's content sanitization by accessing documentation content directly through the TechDocs API. This bypass becomes particularly concerning when the TechDocs API is hosted on the same origin as the Backstage app or other backend plugins (GitHub Advisory).

If successfully exploited, the vulnerability enables malicious internal actors to upload documentation content containing malicious scripts. When users access this content through the TechDocs API, the normal content sanitization is bypassed, potentially exposing sensitive data, particularly if the TechDocs API shares the same origin as the Backstage app or other backend plugins (GitHub Advisory).

The vulnerability has been patched in version 0.6.4 of @backstage/techdocs-common. Users are advised to upgrade to this version or later to address the security issue (GitHub Advisory).
