CVE-2021-32845
Homebrew vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

In versions 0.20210107 and prior of HyperKit, a vulnerability was discovered in the implementation of qnotify at pci_vtrnd_notify. The function fails to check the return value of vq_getchain, which could lead to uninitialized memory use (GitHub Security Lab).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the pci_vtrnd_notify function where the implementation fails to properly validate the return value of vq_getchain. When vq_getchain fails, it can return -1, but this error condition is not handled, leading to the use of an uninitialized struct iovec iov structure in subsequent operations (GitHub Security Lab).

Impact

This vulnerability could lead to a denial of service condition and under certain circumstances, memory corruption. When exploited, it allows a malicious guest to potentially crash the host system (GitHub Security Lab).

Mitigation and workarounds

The issue has been fixed by adding proper error checking for the return value of vq_getchain. The fix includes adding a check for negative return values and implementing appropriate error handling (GitHub Commit).
