CVE-2021-3504 is a security vulnerability discovered in the hivex library versions before 1.3.20. The vulnerability exists due to a lack of bounds check within the hivexopen function. The vulnerability is caused by an out-of-bounds memory access in the hivex_open function. When processing Windows Registry hive files, the function fails to properly validate node key length values. This implementation flaw allows for reading memory beyond normal bounds when processing specially crafted input.
