CVE-2021-3504
NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2021-3504 is a security vulnerability discovered in the hivex library versions before 1.3.20. The vulnerability exists due to a lack of bounds check within the hivexopen function. Hivex is a library that can read and write Windows Registry hive files (NVD, [Red Hat](https://bugzilla.redhat.com/showbug.cgi?id=1949687)).

Technical details

The vulnerability is caused by an out-of-bounds memory access in the hivex_open function. When processing Windows Registry hive files, the function fails to properly validate node key length values. This implementation flaw allows for reading memory beyond normal bounds when processing specially crafted input. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 Base Score of 5.4 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:L (NVD).

Impact

If exploited, an attacker could input a specially crafted Windows Registry (hive) file which would cause hivex to read memory beyond its normal bounds or cause the program to crash. The highest threat from this vulnerability is to system availability. The vulnerability could potentially lead to information disclosure through the reading of arbitrary memory (NVD, Red Hat).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability has been fixed in hivex version 1.3.20. Users are advised to upgrade to this version or apply appropriate security patches provided by their distribution vendors. Various Linux distributions have released security updates to address this vulnerability, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Fedora, Ubuntu, and Debian (Red Hat, Debian).
