NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A stack corruption bug was found in libtpms versions before 0.7.2 and before 0.8.0 while decrypting data using RSA. The vulnerability was discovered in June 2021 and is tracked as CVE-2021-3569 (NVD, Red Hat).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the CryptRsaDecrypt() function located in src/tpm2/crypto/openssl/CryptRsa.c of the libtpms library (Bugzilla).

This flaw could result in a SIGBUS (bad memory access) and termination of swtpm, potentially leading to a denial of service condition (Red Hat).
