CVE-2021-46577
Bentley MicroStation CONNECT vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

This vulnerability (CVE-2021-46577) affects Bentley MicroStation CONNECT 10.16.0.80. The vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability as the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of JT files. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of the length of user-supplied data prior to copying it to a heap-based buffer (Vendor Advisory, ZDI Advisory).

Technical details

The vulnerability is caused by improper validation of user-supplied data length before copying it to a heap-based buffer during JT file parsing. This heap-based buffer overflow condition can be triggered when processing maliciously crafted JT files. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (High) with the following vector: AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (ZDI Advisory).

Impact

A successful exploit could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. This means an attacker could potentially take complete control of the affected system with the same privileges as the application processing the malicious file (Vendor Advisory).

Mitigation and workarounds

Bentley has released version 10.16.02.* and more recent versions to address this vulnerability. Users are recommended to update to the latest versions of MicroStation and MicroStation-based applications. As a general best practice, it is also recommended to only open JT files coming from trusted sources (Vendor Advisory).
