NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

A vulnerability in the VirusEvent feature of ClamAV could allow a local attacker to inject arbitrary commands with the privileges of the application service account. The vulnerability was identified with CVE-2024-20328 and is due to unsafe handling of file names (AttackerKB).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from unsafe handling of file names in the VirusEvent feature. When processed on a system using configuration options for the VirusEvent feature, an attacker could exploit this by supplying a file name containing command-line sequences (AttackerKB).

Impact

If successfully exploited, this vulnerability allows the attacker to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the application service account (AttackerKB).

Mitigation and workarounds

ClamAV has released software updates that address this vulnerability. There are no workarounds available that address this vulnerability (AttackerKB).
