A buffer over-read vulnerability was discovered in Vim text editor versions prior to 8.2. The vulnerability was identified and tracked as CVE-2022-2124, with the initial disclosure occurring in June 2022 (Debian LTS).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the current_quote() function where searching for quotes may go over the end of the line. This occurs when the line was changed after the Visual area was selected. The issue was addressed with improved checks for running into the NUL character (Vim Commit).

The vulnerability could lead to a denial-of-service condition through application crash or other unspecified impacts when processing maliciously crafted files (Debian LTS).

Mitigation and workarounds
