iText v7.1.17 and versions up to (excluding) 7.1.18 and 7.2.2 were discovered to contain an out-of-memory error via the component readStreamBytesRaw, which allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) via a crafted PDF file (CVE Mitre, NVD).
The vulnerability exists in the readStreamBytesRaw component of the PdfReader class, which can trigger an out-of-memory error when processing specially crafted PDF files. The issue was discovered and reported by security researchers Zhang Cen, Huang Wenjie, and Zhang Xiaohan as part of a larger security audit of the iText library (GitHub PR).
When successfully exploited, this vulnerability can lead to a Denial of Service condition through out-of-memory errors, potentially affecting the availability of applications using the vulnerable versions of iText (GitHub PR).
The vulnerability has been fixed in iText versions 7.1.18 and 7.2.2. Users are advised to upgrade to these or later versions to mitigate the risk. The fix was implemented in commit 3213363 (iText Release, GitHub PR).
