CVE-2022-2598 is an Out-of-bounds Write vulnerability discovered in the GitHub repository vim/vim affecting versions prior to 9.0.0100. The vulnerability was identified and disclosed on August 1, 2022, primarily affecting the diff mode functionality in the Vim text editor (CVE Mitre).

The vulnerability manifests as an invalid memory access issue in diff mode when using the 'dp' command combined with undo operations. The core issue involves improper bounds checking that could allow the line number in the diff block to go below one, leading to invalid memory access (Vim Commit).

When exploited, this vulnerability could cause a denial of service condition in affected Vim installations. The issue particularly affects Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS systems (Broadcom Support).

The vulnerability has been patched in Vim version 9.0.0101. The fix ensures that the line number does not go below one by implementing proper bounds checking. Users are advised to upgrade to Vim version 9.0.0100 or later. For Ubuntu users, specific package updates are available: vim-common - 2:8.2.3995-1ubuntu2.11 and related packages (Broadcom Support).
