CVE-2022-28966
Python vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

Wasm3 0.5.0 contains a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the NewCodePage function within m3code.c, which is called indirectly from CompileBranchTable in m3_compile.c. The vulnerability was discovered and disclosed on April 16, 2022 (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability is a heap-based buffer overflow that occurs in the NewCodePage function at line 25:29 in m3code.c. When called through CompileBranchTable, the function performs an out-of-bounds write operation that can corrupt heap memory. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.5 (Medium) with vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H (NVD).

Impact

When exploited, the vulnerability can cause heap memory corruption leading to application crashes. This is evidenced by the proof-of-concept which triggers a 'corrupted unsorted chunks' error and results in a core dump. The vulnerability affects the integrity of the application's memory management system (GitHub Issue).
