Multiple components in Apache NiFi versions 0.0.1 to 1.16.0 were identified with a vulnerability related to XML External Entity (XXE) references in the default configuration. This vulnerability was discovered and disclosed on April 29, 2022, affecting the Standard Content Viewer service and multiple processors including EvaluateXPath, EvaluateXQuery, and ValidateXml (Apache NiFi Security, NVD).
The vulnerability is classified under CWE-611 and involves improper restriction of XML External Entity references. The Standard Content Viewer service would attempt to resolve XML External Entity references when viewing formatted XML files. Additionally, several processors (EvaluateXPath, EvaluateXQuery, and ValidateXml) would attempt to resolve XML External Entity references when configured with default property values (NVD).
Apache NiFi flow configurations that include the affected processors are vulnerable to malicious XML documents containing Document Type Declarations with XML External Entity references. This could potentially lead to information disclosure, server-side request forgery, or denial of service attacks (Apache NiFi Security).
The vulnerability was fixed in Apache NiFi version 1.16.1. The resolution disables Document Type Declarations in the default configuration for the affected processors and disallows XML External Entity resolution in standard services. Users running affected versions should upgrade to version 1.16.1 or later (Apache NiFi Security).
