CVE-2022-33740
Linux Kernel vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

The vulnerability CVE-2022-33740 was discovered in July 2022 and affects the Xen paravirtualization frontend in the Linux kernel. The vulnerability occurs when the frontend does not properly initialize memory pages that are used for shared communication with the backend. This issue was discovered by Roger Pau Monné of Citrix (Xen Advisory).

Technical details

The vulnerability is related to memory handling in Linux Block and Network PV device frontends. Specifically, the frontends fail to zero memory regions before sharing them with the backend, which can lead to information disclosure. The issue has been assigned a CVSS v3 severity score of 7.1 (High) (Ubuntu Security).

Impact

An untrusted backend can access data that was not intended to be shared. If such mappings are made with write permissions, the backend could potentially cause malfunctions and/or crashes to consumers of contiguous data in the shared pages (Xen Advisory).

Mitigation and workarounds

There is no mitigation available other than not using PV devices in cases where a backend is suspected to be potentially malicious. The issue has been fixed in various Linux kernel versions, including Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (5.15.0-48.54), Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (5.4.0-128.144), and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (4.15.0-194.205) (Ubuntu Security).
