CVE-2022-35930
vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2022-35930 affects PolicyController, a utility used to enforce supply chain policy in Kubernetes clusters, in versions prior to 0.2.1. The vulnerability was discovered by mattmoor and disclosed on August 4, 2022 (GitHub Advisory).

Technical details

The vulnerability allows bypassing attestation verification when there is at least one attestation with a valid signature but no attestations of the type being verified. By default, the verification type is set to 'custom'. This results in PolicyController reporting false positives and incorrectly admitting resources that should be rejected (GitHub Advisory).

Impact

When exploited, this vulnerability leads to PolicyController incorrectly admitting resources that should be rejected based on attestation policies. This could potentially allow unauthorized images to be deployed in a Kubernetes cluster, bypassing the intended supply chain security controls (GitHub Advisory).

Mitigation and workarounds

Users should upgrade to PolicyController version 0.2.1 or greater to patch this vulnerability. No workarounds are available for affected versions (GitHub Advisory).
