WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The vulnerability (CVE-2022-37342) is an Authenticated Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting the WordPress Add Shortcodes Actions And Filters plugin versions 2.0.9 and below. The issue was publicly disclosed on September 12, 2022, and affects users with administrative privileges (WPScan).

The vulnerability stems from improper sanitization and escaping of certain plugin settings, which could allow high-privilege users such as administrators to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks. This vulnerability is particularly concerning in multisite setups where the unfiltered_html capability is disallowed. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS score of 4.8 (medium) and is classified under OWASP Top 10 A7: Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) and CWE-79 (WPScan).

The vulnerability could allow authenticated administrators to inject and execute malicious JavaScript code in the context of other users' browsers who access the affected pages. This could potentially lead to session hijacking, defacement, or theft of sensitive information (WPScan).

As of January 19, 2024, the plugin has been closed and is no longer available for download due to security issues. Users are advised to remove the plugin from their WordPress installations and seek alternative solutions (WordPress).
