Apache HTTP Server vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2022-37436 is a security vulnerability affecting the mod_proxy module in Apache HTTP Server prior to version 2.4.55. The vulnerability was discovered in July 2022 and allows a malicious backend to cause response headers to be truncated early (Red Hat Portal).

The vulnerability occurs when a malicious backend can cause response headers to be truncated early, resulting in some headers being incorporated into the response body. If the later headers have any security purpose, they will not be interpreted by the client, leading to HTTP response splitting (Apache HTTP).

When exploited, this vulnerability can result in security headers not being properly interpreted by the client, potentially bypassing security controls. The headers that are meant to provide security functions may be incorporated into the response body instead of being processed as headers (Red Hat Portal).

The recommended mitigation is to upgrade Apache HTTP Server to version 2.4.55 or later, which contains the fix for this vulnerability. The issue has been addressed in multiple distribution updates, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHSA-2023:0852).
