Certain The MPlayer Project products are vulnerable to a Divide By Zero vulnerability via the function demuxavireadpacket of libmpdemux/demuxavi.c. This vulnerability affects MPlayer SVN-r38374-13.0.1 and mencoder SVN-r38374-13.0.1 (NVD, CVE).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists in the demuxavireadpacket function within libmpdemux/demuxavi.c. The issue occurs when processing certain malformed AVI media files, which can trigger a division by zero condition. The vulnerability was discovered and reported with a proof-of-concept file that could reproduce the issue when compiled with Address Sanitizer (ASAN) (MPlayer Ticket).

Impact

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to cause a denial of service condition by crashing the application through a division by zero error. This occurs when processing specially crafted media files (Ubuntu Notice).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability has been fixed in various distributions through security updates. Ubuntu has released patches for versions 22.10, 22.04 LTS, 20.04 LTS, and 18.04 LTS. Debian has also addressed this in version 2:1.3.0-8+deb10u1 for Debian 10 buster (Ubuntu Notice, Debian LTS).
