CVE-2022-39316
NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

FreeRDP is a free remote desktop protocol library and clients. An out-of-bound read vulnerability (CVE-2022-39316) was discovered in the ZGFX decoder component of FreeRDP. The vulnerability affects versions prior to 2.9.0, which was released as a fix for this issue (GitHub Advisory, Debian Tracker).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists due to missing length checks in the ZGFX decoder component. The issue was addressed by adding missing length checks in the zgfxdecompresssegment function, as evidenced by the patch that includes additional validation for segment size and buffer boundaries (GitHub Commit).

Impact

A malicious server can exploit this vulnerability to cause FreeRDP-based clients to read out-of-bounds data and attempt to decode it, which would likely result in a crash of the client application (GitHub Advisory, Ubuntu Notice).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability has been fixed in FreeRDP version 2.9.0. Users are advised to upgrade to this version or later. Various distributions have also released security updates to address this vulnerability, including Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora (Ubuntu Notice, Debian LTS).
