CVE-2022-4303
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2022-4303 affects the WP Limit Login Attempts WordPress plugin through version 2.6.4. The vulnerability was discovered and publicly disclosed on December 27, 2022, by security researcher Daniel Ruf (WPScan).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from the plugin's IP address handling mechanism, where it prioritizes getting a visitor's IP from certain HTTP headers (HTTPCLIENTIP or HTTPXFORWARDEDFOR) over PHP's REMOTEADDR. This implementation flaw in the wplimitgetip() function makes it possible to bypass IP-based restrictions on login forms (WPScan).

Impact

The vulnerability allows attackers to bypass IP-based login restrictions, potentially enabling brute force attacks against WordPress login forms that would normally be prevented by the plugin (WPScan, NVD).

Mitigation and workarounds

As of the latest available information, there is no known fix for this vulnerability in the WP Limit Login Attempts plugin (WPScan).
