CVE-2022-49702
Linux Kernel vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2022-49702 is a vulnerability in the Linux kernel that affects the BTRFS filesystem. The issue was discovered in the unmounting process when a block group reclaim task is running. This vulnerability was fixed in later kernel versions and affects systems using the BTRFS filesystem (Kernel Git).

Technical details

The vulnerability occurs during the unmount process in close_ctree() when there is a reclaim task running and relocating a data block group. The issue manifests as a deadlock between the async reclaim task and the unmount process. The deadlock occurs because the block group reclaim task can create delayed iputs after the cleaner kthread is parked, leading to a situation where the async reclaim task hangs waiting for delayed iputs that can never be processed (Kernel Git).

Impact

When triggered, this vulnerability causes a system hang during the unmount process of a BTRFS filesystem. The hang occurs due to a deadlock between different kernel tasks, preventing the system from properly unmounting the filesystem and potentially requiring a system restart (Kernel Git).

Mitigation and workarounds

The issue has been fixed by modifying the unmount process to stop the async block group reclaim task before parking the cleaner kthread. This prevents the creation of new delayed iputs after the cleaner is parked. The fix was implemented in the Linux kernel and is available through system updates (Kernel Git).
