WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2023-0170 is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting the Html5 Audio Player WordPress plugin versions below 2.1.12. The vulnerability was discovered and publicly disclosed on January 12, 2023, affecting users with contributor-level permissions and above (WPScan).

The vulnerability stems from improper validation and escaping of shortcode attributes before they are output in pages or posts where the shortcode is embedded. This security flaw has been assigned a CVSS score of 6.8 (medium severity) and is classified under CWE-79. The vulnerability can be exploited through malicious shortcode attributes, specifically using the h5apinlineplayer shortcode (WPScan).

When exploited, this vulnerability allows authenticated users with contributor privileges or higher to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks. This could potentially lead to the execution of malicious JavaScript code in users' browsers who view the affected pages (WPScan).

The vulnerability has been patched in version 2.1.12 of the Html5 Audio Player plugin. Users are advised to update to this version or later to mitigate the security risk (WPScan).
