NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A divide by zero vulnerability was discovered in GitHub repository vim/vim prior to version 9.0.1247. The vulnerability was assigned CVE-2023-0512 and was disclosed in January 2023. The issue affects the 'smoothscroll' functionality when the window is too narrow (VIM Commit).

The vulnerability occurs in the adjust_skipcol() function when the window width becomes too narrow while 'smoothscroll' is enabled. The issue could lead to a floating point exception error due to division by zero. The fix involves adding a check for when the window width (width1) is less than or equal to 0, and returning early in such cases to prevent the division by zero (VIM Commit).

When exploited, this vulnerability could cause an application to crash due to a floating point exception error when processing specially crafted files (Red Hat CVE).

The vulnerability was patched in Vim version 9.0.1247. Users should upgrade to this version or later to mitigate the issue. The fix has been incorporated into various operating system distributions, including macOS Ventura 13.3, macOS Monterey 12.6.4, and macOS Big Sur 11.7.5 (Apple Security, Apple Security, Apple Security).
