CVE-2023-24391
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

A Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in Spider Teams ApplyOnline WordPress plugin versions 2.5.5 and below. The vulnerability was identified on January 22, 2023, and publicly disclosed on June 26, 2023. This security issue affects the WordPress plugin 'ApplyOnline - Application Form Builder and Manager' and requires administrator-level access to exploit (Patchstack).

Technical details

The vulnerability occurs because the plugin does not properly validate and escape certain parameters, which could allow users with admin privileges to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks even when the unfiltered_html capability is disallowed, such as in multisite setups. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.9 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L according to Patchstack, while NVD assigned a slightly lower score of 4.8 (Medium) with the vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N (NVD, WPScan).

Impact

The vulnerability could allow malicious actors with administrative access to inject malicious scripts, including redirects, advertisements, and other HTML payloads into the website. These injected scripts would then be executed when guests visit the affected site (Patchstack).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability has been patched in version 2.5.6 of the ApplyOnline plugin. Users are advised to update to version 2.5.6 or later to remove the vulnerability. Patchstack users have the option to enable auto-updates for vulnerable plugins (Patchstack).
