Overview

Auth. (admin+) Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in Vadym K. Extra User Details WordPress plugin versions 0.5 and below. The vulnerability was reported on April 27, 2023, and publicly disclosed on June 19, 2023 (Patchstack).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from improper sanitization and escaping of certain plugin settings, which could allow high-privilege users such as administrators to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks, even when the unfiltered_html capability is disallowed (for example in multisite setup). The vulnerability is classified as CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) and has received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 4.8 (MEDIUM) from NIST with vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N (NVD).

Impact

This vulnerability could allow malicious actors to inject malicious scripts, such as redirects, advertisements, and other HTML payloads into the website which will be executed when guests visit the site (Patchstack).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 0.5.1 of the Extra User Details plugin. Users are advised to update to version 0.5.1 or later to remove the vulnerability (Patchstack).
