CVE-2023-38518: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in the Visualmodo Borderless WordPress plugin versions 1.4.8 and below. The vulnerability was identified on July 18, 2023, and was assigned CVE-2023-38518. The issue affects users with administrative privileges and above, particularly in multisite setups where the unfilteredhtml capability is disallowed ([Patchstack](https://patchstack.com/database/vulnerability/borderless/wordpress-borderless-plugin-1-4-7-cross-site-scripting-xss?s_id=cve), WPScan).

The vulnerability stems from the plugin's failure to properly validate and escape certain parameters, enabling users with administrative privileges to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.9 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L according to Patchstack's assessment. The NVD provided a slightly different score of 4.8 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N (Patchstack).

This vulnerability could allow malicious actors to inject malicious scripts, including redirects, advertisements, and other HTML payloads into the website. These injected scripts would be executed when guests visit the affected site. The severity is considered low priority, and the vulnerability is unlikely to be exploited in most scenarios (Patchstack).

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 1.4.9 of the Borderless plugin. Users are advised to update to version 1.4.9 or later to remove the vulnerability. Patchstack users have the option to enable auto-update for vulnerable plugins (Patchstack).
