Overview
A Regular Expression Denial of Service (ReDoS) vulnerability was discovered in NPMJS Node Email Check version 1.0.4. The vulnerability exists in the scpSyntax component where an attacker can cause a denial of service by providing a crafted string (NVD, GitHub Exploit).
Technical details
The vulnerability is located in the regex pattern on line 10 of main.js in the node-email-check package. When a malicious string is provided to the email validation function, it can cause catastrophic backtracking in the regular expression engine, leading to excessive CPU usage and application hanging. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.5 HIGH with vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H (NVD).
Impact
When exploited, this vulnerability can cause the application using the package to become unresponsive due to excessive CPU consumption during email validation. This effectively creates a denial of service condition, making the application unavailable to legitimate users (GitHub Exploit).
