CVE-2023-40663: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in the Rextheme WP VR WordPress plugin versions 8.3.4 and below. The vulnerability was reported on April 14, 2023, and publicly disclosed on August 18, 2023. This security issue affects the WP VR plugin, which is a 360 Panorama and Virtual Tour Builder for WordPress (Patchstack).

The vulnerability occurs because the plugin fails to properly sanitize and escape certain parameters before outputting them back in the page. This security flaw has been assigned CVE-2023-40663 and has received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.1 (MEDIUM) from NIST and 7.1 (HIGH) from Patchstack. The vulnerability is classified under CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation) (NVD, WPScan).

The vulnerability could allow malicious actors to inject malicious scripts, including redirects, advertisements, and other HTML payloads into the website, which would be executed when guests visit the site. This XSS vulnerability could be particularly dangerous when used against high-privilege users such as administrators (Patchstack).

The vulnerability has been patched in version 8.3.5 of the WP VR plugin. Site administrators are strongly advised to update to this version or later to resolve the security issue. For users unable to update immediately, Patchstack has issued a virtual patch to mitigate this issue by blocking potential attacks (Patchstack).
