CVE-2023-45682
Linux Debian vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

stbvorbis is a single file MIT licensed library for processing ogg vorbis files. A crafted file may trigger out of bounds read in DECODE macro when var is negative. As it can be seen in the definition of `DECODERAW a negative var` is a valid value. The vulnerability was discovered in version 1.22 and assigned CVE-2023-45682 in October 2023 (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability is classified as an out-of-bounds read (CWE-125) with a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.1 HIGH (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:H) according to NVD assessment, while GitHub rates it as 5.3 MEDIUM (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L) (NVD).

Impact

This vulnerability may be exploited to leak internal memory allocation information, potentially exposing sensitive data (GitHub Security Lab).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability affects multiple versions of the library including those packaged in major Linux distributions. Debian marks this as vulnerable in bullseye, bookworm, trixie and sid releases. Users should update to patched versions when available (Debian Security Tracker).
