CVE-2023-4842: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

The Social Warfare plugin for WordPress (versions up to 4.4.3) contains a Stored Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability (CVE-2023-4842) via the 'social_warfare' shortcode. The vulnerability was discovered and reported by István Márton from Wordfence, with public disclosure on November 6, 2023 (Wordfence Advisory).

The vulnerability stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied attributes in the 'social_warfare' shortcode. The issue has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 5.4 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N. The vulnerability is classified as CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation (NVD).

When exploited, this vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level permissions or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. These malicious scripts will execute whenever a user accesses the compromised page, potentially leading to data theft, session hijacking, or other malicious actions (NVD).

Users should immediately update their Social Warfare plugin to a version newer than 4.4.3. A patch has been released to address this vulnerability (WordPress Plugin).
