CVE-2023-49168: 
WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A Cross-site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in WordPlus Better Messages – Live Chat for WordPress, BuddyPress, PeepSo, Ultimate Member, BuddyBoss plugin affecting versions through 2.4.0. The vulnerability was reported on July 31, 2023, and publicly disclosed on November 29, 2023. This security issue allows for Stored XSS attacks in the WordPress plugin (Patchstack).

The vulnerability is classified as an Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation (CWE-79). It received a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.5 (Medium) from Patchstack with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L, while NIST assigned a slightly lower score of 5.4 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N (NVD).

The vulnerability could allow malicious actors to inject malicious scripts, including redirects, advertisements, and other HTML payloads into the website. These injected scripts would be executed when visitors access the affected site. The attack requires user interaction and has the potential to impact confidentiality and integrity of the system (Patchstack).

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 2.4.1 of the plugin. Users are advised to update to version 2.4.1 or later to remediate the issue. Patchstack has also issued a virtual patch to mitigate this vulnerability by blocking potential attacks until users can update to the fixed version (Patchstack).
