CVE-2023-52792
Linux Kernel vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2023-52792 affects the Linux kernel's CXL (Compute Express Link) region handling functionality. The vulnerability was discovered in the kernel's CXL subsystem, specifically related to the cleanup process after cxlregionsetup_targets() failures. This issue was identified and subsequently addressed through kernel patches (Kernel Git).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from improper cleanup handling in the CXL region management code. When cxlregionsetup_targets() fails, the cleanup process did not properly set the decoder's region to NULL, leading to potential resource management issues. Additionally, the decoder was not being properly freed, which could result in commit errors associated with the upstream switch. The issue was introduced by commit 5e42bcbc3fef and was later modified by commit 86987c766276 (Kernel Git).

Impact

The vulnerability could prevent endpoint and switch decoder resources from being reused properly. This would result in future dpasizestore() calls returning -EBUSY errors and potential commit errors associated with the upstream switch (Kernel Git).

Mitigation and workarounds

The issue has been resolved by modifying the cleanup process to return immediately when cxlregionsetup_targets() fails, allowing resources associated with the target to be cleaned up normally when the failed region is deleted. Additionally, a new check was implemented to prevent array overflow in p->targets[] (Kernel Git).
