CVE-2023-53221
Linux Kernel vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

A memory leak vulnerability was identified in the Linux kernel's BPF (Berkeley Packet Filter) subsystem, tracked as CVE-2023-53221. The issue occurs when there is a failure to attach fentry, resulting in allocated BPF trampoline images being left in the system. This vulnerability was disclosed on September 15, 2025 (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability manifests when attempting to attach fentry to functions that are freed after kernel initialization. When the attachment fails, the allocated BPF trampoline image remains in the system, which can be verified by checking /proc/kallsyms. The issue is compounded when libbpf falls back to raw tracepoint after receiving an -EINVAL error, potentially leaving multiple trampoline images in the system. This can be demonstrated using a simple BPF program targeting the trap_init function (NVD).

Impact

The vulnerability results in a memory leak in the Linux kernel, where system memory is not properly freed after failed BPF operations. This can lead to gradual system resource consumption if exploited repeatedly (NVD).
