IrfanView vulnerability analysis and mitigation

IrfanView DXF File Parsing Out-Of-Bounds Write Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (CVE-2024-11559) is a security flaw discovered in IrfanView software. The vulnerability was reported on July 24, 2024, and publicly disclosed on November 21, 2024. This vulnerability affects IrfanView installations, specifically version 4.67 for both x64 and x86 architectures (ZDI Advisory).

The vulnerability exists within the parsing of DXF files and stems from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a write past the end of an allocated buffer. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. The weakness has been classified as CWE-787 (Out-of-bounds Write) (NVD).
