CVE-2024-24266
NixOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

A Use-After-Free (UAF) vulnerability was discovered in gpac version 2.2.1, specifically in the dasher_configure_pid function located at /src/filters/dasher.c. The vulnerability was assigned CVE-2024-24266 and was reported in February 2024 (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability occurs when a pointer variable 'p' is passed to the gf_filter_pid_set_property function. Within the execution flow, the memory block pointed to by value->value.string is released, but the program continues to use this freed memory by assigning the null pointer p->value.string to segext and subsequently attempting to use it in a strcmp function call. This results in a null pointer dereference. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.5 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H (NVD, GitHub Analysis).

Impact

The exploitation of this vulnerability could lead to a denial-of-service (DoS) attack, affecting the availability of the system (GitHub Analysis).
