WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability has been identified in the WordPress All 404 Pages Redirect to Homepage plugin versions up to 1.9. The vulnerability was discovered on December 24, 2023, and publicly disclosed on February 8, 2024. This security issue affects all installations of the plugin up to version 1.9 (Patchstack).

The vulnerability is classified as an Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation (Cross-site Scripting) issue. It has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 score of 6.1 (Medium) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N. The vulnerability allows for unauthenticated stored XSS attacks, indicating that malicious actors can inject and store malicious scripts that will be executed when users visit the affected pages (Patchstack).

The vulnerability could allow malicious actors to inject malicious scripts, including redirects, advertisements, and other HTML payloads into the website. These injected scripts would be executed when guests visit the affected site, potentially compromising user security and website integrity (Patchstack).

Users are advised to update to version 2.0 or later of the All 404 Pages Redirect to Homepage plugin to resolve the vulnerability. For temporary mitigation, Patchstack has issued a virtual patch to block potential attacks until users can update to the fixed version (Patchstack).
