Joomla vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Joomla! CMS versions 3.4.6-3.10.16-elts, 4.0.0-4.4.6, and 5.0.0-5.1.2 contain an open redirect vulnerability due to inadequate validation of URLs, which could result in an invalid check whether a redirect URL is internal or not. The vulnerability was reported on March 20, 2024, and fixed on August 20, 2024, with CVE identifier CVE-2024-27184 (Joomla Security).

The vulnerability is classified as an open redirect (CWE-601) with a CVSS v3.1 Base Score of 6.1 MEDIUM (Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N). The issue stems from inadequate validation of internal URLs in the core functionality of Joomla CMS (NVD Database).
