CVE-2024-38630
Linux Kernel vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

CVE-2024-38630 is a use-after-free vulnerability discovered in the Linux kernel's watchdog subsystem, specifically in the cpu5wdt.c driver. The vulnerability was disclosed on June 21, 2024, affecting Linux kernel versions from 3.8 through 6.6.33 and 6.7 through 6.9.4. The issue occurs in the cpu5wdt module's timer handling mechanism (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from improper timer handling during module removal. When the cpu5wdt module is being removed, it uses deltimer() to deactivate the timer. However, if the timer handler is running, deltimer() cannot stop it and returns immediately. This creates a race condition where if the port region is released by releaseregion() while the timer handler cpu5wdttrigger() attempts to write to the released region using outb(), a use-after-free condition occurs. The issue has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (High) with vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (NVD).

Impact

The vulnerability could allow an attacker with local access to execute code, potentially leading to privilege escalation and system compromise. The high CVSS score indicates that successful exploitation could result in complete compromise of system confidentiality, integrity, and availability (Ubuntu).

Mitigation and workarounds

The vulnerability has been fixed by changing deltimer() to timershutdown_sync() to ensure the timer handler completes before the port region is released. Users should update to Linux kernel versions 6.6.33 or later, or 6.9.4 or later. Multiple Linux distributions have released patches, including Ubuntu which has provided fixes across various kernel packages for different versions (Kernel Patch).
