Adobe Audition vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Adobe Audition versions 24.4.1, 23.6.6 and earlier are affected by an out-of-bounds write vulnerability that was discovered by Mat Powell of Trend Micro Zero Day Initiative. The vulnerability was reported on May 1, 2024, and publicly disclosed on September 10, 2024. This security flaw affects Adobe Audition installations on both Windows and macOS operating systems (ZDI Advisory, Adobe Advisory).

The vulnerability is classified as an out-of-bounds write (CWE-787) that specifically exists within the parsing of AVI files. The issue stems from inadequate validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a write operation past the end of an allocated buffer. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (High), with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, indicating local access, low attack complexity, no privileges required, and user interaction required (ZDI Advisory).

If successfully exploited, this vulnerability could lead to arbitrary code execution in the context of the current user. This means an attacker could potentially execute malicious code with the same privileges as the user running Adobe Audition (NVD).

Adobe has released security updates to address this vulnerability. Users are advised to update their Adobe Audition installations to versions newer than 24.4.1 or 23.6.6 to mitigate this security risk (Adobe Advisory).
