CVE-2024-40828: 
macOS vulnerability analysis and mitigation

CVE-2024-40828 is a security vulnerability affecting multiple versions of macOS, including Sonoma 14.6, Monterey 12.7.6, and Ventura 13.6.8. The vulnerability was discovered by Mickey Jin (@patch1t) and disclosed on July 29, 2024. The issue allows a malicious application to potentially gain root privileges on affected systems (Apple Advisory, NVD).

The vulnerability exists in the StorageKit component of macOS and was addressed with improved checks. It has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H by NIST. The CISA-ADP assessment rated it slightly higher at 8.4 (HIGH) with the vector string CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H (NVD).

If exploited, this vulnerability allows a malicious application to gain root privileges on the affected system, potentially giving the attacker complete control over the compromised machine (Apple Advisory).

Apple has released security updates to address this vulnerability in macOS Sonoma 14.6, macOS Monterey 12.7.6, and macOS Ventura 13.6.8. Users are advised to update their systems to the latest versions available through the Mac App Store or Apple's Software Downloads website (Apple Advisory).
