WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

The Frontend Checklist WordPress plugin through version 2.3.2 contains a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability that affects high-privilege users such as administrators. The vulnerability was publicly disclosed on June 5, 2024 (WPScan).

Technical details

The vulnerability exists because the plugin does not properly sanitize and escape some of its settings, which could allow high privilege users such as administrators to perform Stored Cross-Site Scripting attacks even when the unfiltered_html capability is disallowed, such as in multisite setups. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS score of 3.5 (low) and is classified under CWE-79 (WPScan).

Impact

The vulnerability allows high-privilege users to inject malicious JavaScript code into checklist items, which would then be executed when other users view the checklist on the frontend of the website. This could potentially lead to client-side attacks against other site users (WPScan).

Mitigation and workarounds

Currently, there is no known fix available for this vulnerability in the Frontend Checklist plugin (WPScan).
