WordPress vulnerability analysis and mitigation

A Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability was discovered in the SeventhQueen Kleo WordPress theme, affecting versions before 5.4.4. The vulnerability was identified on December 19, 2024, and was assigned CVE-2024-56209. This security flaw stems from insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the theme's functionality (WPScan, Patchstack).

The vulnerability is classified as CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation). The vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages that will execute when users perform specific actions, such as clicking on a malicious link. This could enable attackers to perform various malicious activities including redirects, injecting advertisements, and executing other HTML payloads on the affected website (Patchstack).

The vulnerability has been fixed in version 5.4.4 of the Kleo theme. Users are advised to update to version 5.4.4 or later immediately. Additionally, Patchstack has issued a virtual patch to mitigate this issue by blocking potential attacks until users can update to the fixed version (Patchstack).
