CVE-2024-57897
Linux Kernel vulnerability analysis and mitigation

Overview

In the Linux kernel, a vulnerability has been identified and resolved in the DMA map direction handling within the drm/amdkfd module. The issue was discovered in January 2025 and affects the Linux kernel's AMD KFD (Kernel Fusion Driver) component (NVD).

Technical details

The vulnerability stems from a mismatch between DMA device map direction and DMA unmap settings in the KFD migration case. The SVM DMA device map direction was not properly aligned with the DMA unmap setting, causing the DMA core to report warnings. The issue manifests when performing memory migration operations in the AMD KFD driver (Kernel Commit).

Impact

When triggered, this vulnerability results in DMA core warnings and potential system instability. The issue specifically affects systems using AMD GPUs with KFD functionality enabled, particularly during memory migration operations (NVD).

Mitigation and workarounds

The issue has been fixed by setting the DMA map direction as BIDIRECTIONAL for both mapping operations. This solution simplifies the DMA direction setting alignment and ensures proper synchronization. The fix has been implemented in the Linux kernel and is available through distribution updates (Debian LTS).
